CAS make it easy for schools to work with external arts practitioners in support of their creative curriculum. CAS runs a tried and tested model of arts and education partnership to bring creativity into the classroom called the Education Project Artist Residency.
Every year CAS recruits two promising new graduates from Winchester School of Art and partners them with a school. This is a completely bespoke programme, ensuring each residency is built upon the needs of both the artist and the school. The scheme is our most successful long-running programme.

Where possible, Resident Artists design projects to fulfil cross-curricular requirements, supporting several strands of learning across the school.
As an extension of our role as an Arts Award Development Hub for the South Central Region, it is our intention that all our school residencies are delivered as Arts Award projects. This means that not only will the pupils gain new skills and insights through working with an artist, but they will also gain certification for doing so.
No Service Fees
CAS endeavours to ensure that the projects operate independently of fees and are able to offer a high quality program for next to no cost to the artist or the school. To deliver each project we draw on the resources already available in the school and the only costs are travel and some materials.
After four years of proven delivery, Winchester School of Art recognised the professional development we offer their graduates and now invest £700 per artist who is awarded a residency. This enables the Artists Residency to be financially accessible to all.
As you might expect from an artists studios network, the educational possibilities we can offer you are endless. Our associates have specialisms that include video, drawing, installation, textiles, painting, photography and more.
Your school will be matched with an artist whose interests and experience can enrich your creative education program and inspire your pupils, often through the chance try things they wouldn’t have otherwise experienced!
Creative education at it’s best
Perhaps our greatest asset is the ability to creatively adapt to situations, and deliver inventive solutions that challenge and test a participant.
Our artists have built fires, used potatoes, created film sets, invented archives, formed publishing groups and so on, all whilst stretching the way a person thinks, connects and questions. We have used these methods to:
- raise literacy standards,
- improve self-esteem,
- teach maths,
- teach history,
- teach geography
- and more!
It’s a categorical misconception of many that creativity resides solely in the art room at school. Challenging a paradigm, learning how to ask questions and effect a change based upon your conclusion are powerful skills for life, and can be developed through all manners of artist intervention.

We have worked on a one-to-one basis and with entire schools.
We have worked with infant schools, junior schools, secondary schools, colleges, and universities. We’re qualified and flexible.
Tried and tested
Over the last few years, our EPR programme has become increasingly successful, with pupil and staff satisfaction ranging between 90-100%, as well as parent and family group involvement, providing increased creativity and confidence in pupils.
How it works
The six-month residencies run consecutively, with CAS brokering the partnership. Through a co-creative process, starting with an initial proposal from the artist, we find out what everyone needs, then ensure they get it.
Each residency is unique, as it depends on the schools timetable and curriculum needs, as well as the artists availability and skill set. Approaches to the six-month project window could range from an artist working with pupils every day for the full duration, to planning a single spectacular one-day event.
CAS endeavours to ensure that the projects operate independently of fees: the only costs being travel and materials. Instead, payment is based on a bartering exchange. The artist may have needs: experience, access to facilities, people to make a participatory project work etc. Similarly, the school may need some workshops delivered or, for example, require some involvement with an external practitioner. Through negotiation and a flexible work structure, we ensure both parties support and help each other and, ultimately, the pupils benefit from a first-class creative experience.
