‘IN THE ROUND’ is a phrase that can be applied to many disciplines from sculpture, to theatre, to music, and many more. In the case of this show it carries a multi-layered meaning, a Russian doll of terminology if you like, which continues to reveal itself as each layer is explored.
Set within the round structure of the deconsecrated Dissenters Chapel, which forms CAS HQ, the exhibition brings together the work of the current group of CAS associate artists. At different stages in their careers and from very different backgrounds, each operates as an active part of this collaborative and explorative, dynamic network. Yet despite this, the artists retain their individuality of approach, their unique focus of interest, which is celebrated here in this collection of work.
Through this diverse yet relational conversation of material, process, narrative and form, we see reflected the ethos of the CAS organisation. Celebrating its 10th anniversary and its newfound status as a National Portfolio Organisation for Arts Council England, CAS continues to be inclusive, inquisitive and curious. IN THE ROUND, as the phrase suggests, allows us to observe and take in both the artists practices, and this organic and evolving organisation, from all angles.
But to be seen IN THE ROUND is also to be exposed, to be on display with nothing to hide behind. To exhibit as an artist involves just these elements of courage and willingness to make oneself vulnerable through the work. And it is at this intersection that we find ourselves as viewers, with all the privileges and responsibilities that that entails.
In The Round is taking place as part of CASfest 2018
