Artist-writer Maija Liepins has produced an anthology of poetry ‘Paper-clips with Raven.’ Copies of the book are available from CAS (The Chapel in Andover cemetery) during CASfest. As part of the festival Maija is exhibiting a film at the CAS Associate Artist’s art exhibition IN THE ROUND 18 – 24 March 2019.
“Daily walks, and ‘making art my everyday’ has been a vital source of recovering a soul-deep sense of wellbeing, by which I mean I have relied on it for strength building, connecting with myself and life’s beauty, for self expression, and courage building acts of bravery.” An Australian born artist, Maija’s artwork is sensory, often meditative, depicting emotional landscapes. Working in mixed-media, she combines layers of dance and movement, poetry and utterances, with film and photographs creating links across time and geography.
The book ‘Paper-clips with Raven’ and the film ‘Wild Mother’ showing at IN THE ROUND are companion pieces. The book has more poetry in, and comes with a free audiobook. The film, depicts mood and movement in an immersive and sensual way: the artist has collected sounds and other sensory impressions on film and layered them together with poetry to create a meditative and elemental experience.
About The Film
With the presence of the ‘wild mother’ (an antidote to what Clarissa Estes calls the ‘too good mother’) Maija attempts to stir ones ‘inner world’. As the weather transforms, so too does ones feelings. It’s almost as if she is making visible the layers of inner and outer experience in one frame. The artists hands and figure, present in the work, invite you on an intimate journey beyond the garden gate and into the woods where dreams and magic may be found. “Sometimes it feels like I am collaborating with the weather, and the software! I get all sorts of surprises when I combine them, they’re really very co-operative, always weaving themselves together as if I had planned it to a T.”

Maija says she collects people’s responses to her written words to remind her to keep writing, and keep making. Here are some of the responses from some people she would like to thank for helping her keep going:
“Maija you magical poetess, your words hit the bullseye of my weary heart”. – Katie Leigh Monroe
“Your images are so soothing to me, it’s like a salve to an open wound, it just feels so much like home to me and reminds me who I am, it’s so beautiful and stunning. Thank you for sharing and putting your work out there into the world because it’s made me smile, it’s made me cry, it’s made me feel (which I tend to run from) so thank you so much. I love being the observer to the towering oak trees of your creativity”. – Nicole Kohlbecker
“You travel the hidden path of the heart which such aplomb” – Shane Hipps
“The way you deliver words is moving. Any words. Even those these were hard to read. I love listening to you speak. The girl with magic words dripping from her lips.” – Shawnie Graves
“Never have I met anyone who feels more acutely and who is somehow able to put into the most articulate of words emotions I have only ever briefly glanced over because they terrify me. You are SO alive. You are so alive and so in touch and I can only hope that someday I have this level of understanding. I see a woman in her power, awakened and awakening and filled with every feeling the the world which make you not just alive but thriving in the chaos. Trust the process. Trust the process. Because I think you are further than you think you are.” – Erica Deegan Bennie

The artists book ‘Paper-clips with Raven’ by Maija Liepins is an anthology of poetry accompanied by photographs and film stills. It includes an introduction by the author which contextualises the volume in the realm of the ‘psyche’ or as she might say ‘the soulful intangible’. A volume that is heart-felt and soulful, Maija has collected together a volume that refreshes and uplifts the spirit, with a relatable ‘inner-voice’ and intriguing images. It will particularly speak to any adult learning to parent themselves through the emotional phases of transition, growth, loss, dream, depression, melancholy, and transformation.
