Georgia de Buriatte recently graduated from Winchester School of Art and was selected by David Dixon for the CAS Educational Project residency. This artist residency program has taken place in Andover primary schools for the past nine years. This time, Georgia has been paired with Kings School in Winchester where she is working with Year 10 students. Over a 4 month period and they will develop work toward an exhibition with a champagne reception in Spring 2019.
“I have a concern that the creativity gets sucked out of how art is taught at school,” said Georgia “It’s often: here’s a shoe, draw a shoe, paint a shoe’, I want to show the staff and students how art can be different from that.”
“I am not an illustrative artist and I can offer a very different experience.”
Speaking to CAS Engagement Officer Maija Liepins this week, Georgia explained she was drawn to the CAS Education Project residency because of her interest in getting more experience in a classroom setting. Georgia already has experience of doing external workshops for people aged 6 – 25 through running things like the WSA Saturday Club, but is looking forward to working as an artist in the school setting to help her choose whether she wants to do a PGCE or a masters degree. She has designed a program of weekly printmaking sessions in which pupils will explore a range of different printing methods and processes.
One of the challenges that Georgia identified with the teachers at Kings is that the students can get anxious about starting creative work.
There is a trend where their work keeps getting smaller and smaller and perfectionism halting their progress. To overcome this Georgia introduced them to a process-based game that would ensure the students could get started without having to decide anything. Using offcuts from a laser cutter, pupils used a dice roll to determine which plate they would print with, and even what coloured ink they would use to create a print.
Maija asked Georgia how she describes her work if she is ‘not an illustrative artist’. Georgia de Buriatte is primarily a participation based artist, engaging audiences in theoretical research-based participation. For example, she will interview people and use the text from that in an installation or use interview cards and involve people in assembling the answer cards in a performative way. She is interested in art that is both multisensory and interactive.
“I want it to be involved, where you have to touch it, and read it. My degree show was a book I made from a series of interviews I did, I had a sound piece, audio recordings, a fake wall, bird song from a church I did a reading in… it was to do with people’s experience of religion. That was interesting because I’m not religious at all and I even worked with a vicar which culminated in me giving a sermon to his congregation from my interviews with people aged 16 to 75. I want people to “wonder why” and get involved in exploring the work, and discovering the layers of meaning, to wonder why I made the decision to include, display, or show things in certain ways.
I chose religion as a subject because I am interested in inviting people to discuss the “not at the dinner table” topics, creating spaces where they feel free to say what they think and feel even if it is controversial.”
