Yonat Nitzan-Green was born once in the unique way in which most people are born as she emerged from Aza Nitzan’s womb about 49 years ago. However, every day gives birth to new life; within this process she is being born everyday. What is the meaning of ‘artist’s statement’ when viewed in light of that process? Words written yesterday are others to the ones written today, words written today will be different from the words of tomorrow. Today’s words are true to this moment – the moment in which they are written - only.
Conflicts and conflict resolutions: ‘Here and there...conflicts occurred, however, they always found the way back to each-other’ (From Y. Nitzan-Green, Lola and the Paintings, 2010). It is not always possible to find a full solution, however, what’s important is to find or form ways which will facilitate meetings for the two opposing sides. Conflict is a source for energy. ‘The empty spaces in her are forever empty but Lola connected them with materials and actions around and inside her’ (Lola and the Paintings). When dealing with conflicts the solution is not always ‘to fill the empty spaces’ (with reference to the story Lola and the Painting).
Sometime it has to be accepted that it is not possible to go back to the way it was before. Other solutions are needed in order to carry on living a self-fulfilled, happy life. In the story, Lola connected her empty spaces with other elements of life. This enabled her to live and blossom. When these empty spaces were neglected she was sucked in and became ill. As long as she denied their existence the result was illness. This is true to what is called ‘the Israeli-Palestinian conflict’. Neglect, denial and blindness of consciousness do not help. What helpful are informed actions of nurturing, support and raising awareness.
My paintings are informed by a critical reflection of kibbutz childhood and the history and presence of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Palestinian writer Yahya Yakhlif’s A Lake Beyond the Wind (Interlink Books, English translation by Salma Khadra Jayyusi 1999, 2003) is a door in my living-room.
