At 3pm the craft was named ‘SpAYCe McSpaceFace’ by flight director Tom Mansfield and members of the public shared their space themed poems as part of the event. The name was chosen by Andover Space Programme crew members from Andover Young Carers (AYC) after much deliberation.
Andover Young Carers, the Picket Twenty Fillies W.I. and the general public have all been engaged in an exploration of the theme ‘There’s A Bigger Picture Out There’. Tom’s vision is to capture footage from ‘as far away as possible’ which turns out to be the edge of space.
The Andover Space Programme devised by Tom Mansfield of Upstart Theatre and commissioned by Chapel Arts Studios (CAS) will launch a high-altitude weather balloon carrying messages, poems, and images supplied by people of Andover in an inspired attempt to reach the edge of space. A chase car will be committed to recovering the craft when it returns to earth, aided by a GPS tracker.
An Andover Space Programme exhibition will be installed at Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium in the new year.
The flight is weather dependent, and accurate weather predictions can only be obtained 3 days in advance. You can get an SMS update sent to your phone when the launch date is confirmed.
