Art Laboratory embraces Dissent as a methodology

1st November – 11th December 2019

Winchester Gallery, WSA, Park Avenue SO23 8DL

CAS Associate Artists will be on-site at Winchester School of Art (WSA) for a 5 week experimental project, read on to find out how you can join in.

What would it mean to be more creative by embracing dissent?

Since late in 2014 CAS has engaged in a stimulating and often challenging dialogue about, around, against, and for dissent. Dissent as an action; a performance; a demand; a relationship; but most provocatively, as a practice, a methodology. Laboratory of Dissent is an interactive and experimental project which invites creative responses to social and political tensions. It embraces multiple viewpoints as artists share and negotiate communal space with each other and the host institution.” – August Jordan Davis

Focusing on the theme Inside / Outside, twelve CAS Associate Artists will work in three cell groups across three different locations at Winchester Gallery to enact a performative critique of ‘systems’; such as assumed norms, rules and conventions. Participating artists will take a stance, challenge themselves and each other, and ultimately relate. Participating artists will find ways to reconfigure boundaries and modes of expression in order to stay in relationship with potentially volatile subjects, or through provocative scenarios.

The artists participating have a broad range of experience and include award winning graduates from the recent Winchester BA (hons) Fine Art course, lecturers and postgraduate students from WSA and professional national and internationally exhibiting artists from Hampshire and beyond. In 2018 those involved exhibited throughout the UK, in London, Madrid and Montreal in text, object, installation and performance work. Susan Francis who will be contributing to and curating films for ‘The Screen’ continues to show her own film work internationally.

Be part of our launch event on Saturday 2 November
